State AI laws: enacted, with proof

Which US states have enacted laws about AI systems, when do they start, who enforces them, and what is the penalty?

Enacted state statutes whose central subject is AI systems or AI-generated content: general AI acts, frontier models, companion and disclosure chatbots, AI in hiring, generative AI transparency and AI in mental health care. This first version holds 22 laws, not all of them: more 2026 chatbot and mental health laws are reported in other states and aren't rows yet. Left out: failed bills, city laws, executive orders, agency rules, resolutions, study commissions, government-only laws, deepfake and election laws, and likeness laws such as Tennessee's ELVIS Act, which never names AI. A blank means we couldn't find it in an official text, never that the answer is no. Connecticut's row shows only the act's AI companion part. This records what the laws say and isn't legal advice.

Last read 2026-11-01. "Not stated" means no source we could use said so. It never means no. Each row's page gives the source and exact quote for its values.
